What is CEREC 4.0?

CEREC 4.0 is a high-tech instrument that helps dentists restore damaged teeth in one appointment. It uses CAD/CAM technology (Computer assisted design/ computer assisted manufacture) to accomplish its purpose.

CEREC 4.0 stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. 3D adds an exciting new dimension to the way it works.

Crowns and Bridges

A “cap,” “jacket,” or “crown” will restore a broken, heavily filled or cracked tooth to its original size and shape. This may also be recommended after root canal therapy has been completed as the tooth tends to become brittle and is more apt to fracture. Crowns can strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and improve the appearance of your teeth. They can be made of all precious metal, porcelain and precious metal, or all porcelain, such as CEREC.

How does CEREC 4.0 work?

After the dentist prepares the tooth, we spray a thin layer of reflective powder directly on the tooth’s surface. Using a special camera, the dentist then takes a digital picture of the tooth. There is no need to take a messy impression and send it to the lab. The dentist then designs the restoration on the computer screen. In the virtual world of CEREC 4.0, the dentist views, manipulates and verifies all aspects of restoration design for accuracy and assurance of an ideal fit. An industrially prepared block of porcelain in the correct shade to match your tooth is then placed in the milling chamber. Minutes later, milling is complete and the restoration is ready to bond in place.

What kind of procedures can it perform?

CEREC 4.0 can perform the following procedures:

Partial and full crowns
Veneers
Inlays, onlays and other single tooth restorations

What are the advantages CEREC 4.0 offers?

The advantages of CEREC 4.0 include:

The restoration is started and finished in a single session.
No need to wear a temporary crown which may break or fall off.
No need to make a messy impression which would go to a lab.
No need for a return visit for the patient!
The restoration is natural looking, as it is made out of tooth-colored ceramic material.
The ceramic material has the same physical characteristics of tooth enamel, unlike laboratory porcelains. It strengthens the tooth, and is kind to the surrounding teeth while being very strong and once in place, virtually unbreakable.
Metal-free, no silver colored fillings.
Allows dentist to save more of the healthy tooth.
Extremely precise. The restoration is bonded permanently in place.

Is this new technology?

No. For over 15 years, the CEREC System has allowed dental professionals to meet patient’s needs by producing single-visit all-ceramic restorations at chairside. With the CEREC 4.0 CAD/CAM technology has reached a point where we now have an excellent alternative to silver/amalgam, and resin to restore missing parts of natural teeth.
